White cotton scattered with small embroidered figures: hearts, a leaf, a little flower, a bird, each one slightly raised where the thread has been worked through from behind, each placed with no particular plan, which is exactly how hand embroidery looks when someone is enjoying themselves.
The care label reads 100% algodón, placing this in the Spanish-speaking world, where embroidered children's clothing is a long domestic tradition and scattered motifs like these are worked at home for one particular child. No machine made these marks. Each was stitched and knotted by hand, and if you look closely you will see that no two are quite the same. The round yoke gathers into a full skirt with fine flutter sleeves; a yellow waistband trim gives the whole thing the warmth of something made in the sun.

Care
Cool gentle wash on its own to protect the threads. Dry in the shade to hold the white. Press on the reverse so the stitches stay proud.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
Everyone agrees the bird was stitched last, because it is the only figure facing the way out. Motifs scattered with no plan are not truly random: they are a small private constellation, and a baby lying beneath them learns a sky before the real one is ever introduced. On warm afternoons the yellow at the waist is said to give off the exact heat of the country it was sewn in. The little flower has been keeping a secret from the leaf for forty years, and neither will say.
