A single sprig climbs the front in yellow stem stitch, hung with white florets and a scatter of green french knots, the kind of small botanical study that took real patience and no pattern to trace from.
There is no label anywhere on her, no maker's mark, nothing stitched in to name a hand or a country. The lace-edged collar, the gathered puff sleeves and the button placket down the front all read consistently mid-century, a construction language shared with labelled department-store dresses of the 1950s and 60s, though here the maker chose to leave no name behind. The colour alone marks her out: pale yellow rarely survives in infant wear from this period, most of what remains leans toward pink or white, so this one is the rarer find.
The hem finishes in a soft scallop rather than a straight turn, echoed in the collar's crocheted lace edge, a small detail that ties the two together. Sleeves gather into a soft puff at the shoulder and close with a narrow 7cm cuff, and the back placket carries two small buttons, hand-sewn through worked buttonholes. The embroidered sprig sits just off centre on the bodice, a quiet, considered placement rather than a mirrored pair.

Hand wash in cool water and avoid wringing. Dry flat away from direct sun to protect the colour. A cool iron on the reverse only, worked around the embroidery and lace trim rather than over them.

Size
Measured flat: Measured flat, she runs 36cm from shoulder to hem, 27cm across the bust and 38cm at the hip, flaring to a 44cm hem. Sleeves are short and gathered, 8cm long and 11cm wide at the widest point, narrowing to a 7cm cuff, with a 4cm neckline drop. No label and no size stated, but by these measurements she suits roughly twelve to eighteen months.

Condition
Excellent. The cotton holds its pale yellow evenly throughout, with no marking, fading or staining. The lace trim is intact and secure, all buttons are original and functioning, and the embroidery shows no loose or missing stitches. This one reads exhibition condition, closer to unworn than loved-in.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
Yellow like this does not keep well, most of it fades to cream or disappears into the wash within a generation, so what survives is stubborn rather than lucky. The sprig on the front is wattle in the wrong season, blooming out of turn and refusing to apologise for it. Some believe scalloped edges are simply a fashion; this one insists they are small waves, and that the dress remembers being closer to water than cloth. She keeps her own colour and answers to no one else's.
