Bubblegum pink cotton with a hem that tells a small story: tulips on green stems and a chicken with a polka-dot belly, cut from fabric and hand-appliquéd onto the skirt with a satin-stitched outline around each shape.
Be-Be's, 1980s to 1990s by its construction. Satin stitch appliqué is the patient way to do it: each piece of fabric held in place by a dense row of embroidery thread worked tightly around the edge, which is what keeps the motifs secure through many washes and still bright and cheerful today. A metal zip set into the centre back, a net petticoat sewn into the lining to hold the skirt out, dotted bows at the chest. This is a dress made with the full understanding that a child's good dress should be capable of being handed down, and it has been, and it still has something to give.
Care
Cool hand wash. Dry flat in the shade so the pink holds. Cool iron on the cotton only, never over the appliqué.

Measured flat: length 42cm, bust 32cm, hip 31cm. Fits approximately AU 1-2, around 12 to 24 months.

Condition
Loved-in softness in the pink cotton. The appliqué is sound and the dotted bows sit where they should. Sweet, honest wear.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
The hem is where the story lives: tulips on their green stems and a chicken with a polka-dotted belly, appliquéd on by hand and going about their business at ankle height. Tulipmania was once a real madness, whole fortunes traded for a single bulb, and this dress remembers the fever fondly and keeps its own small speculation running along the skirt. The chicken has no part in the tulip trade and has simply wandered in, as chickens do, and been allowed to stay. Handed down once already, it arrives still convinced the next child will also want to check on the chicken daily.
