Cappucine · Carol Horn 1970s Plush Fur Coat

A$300.00

Plush pile · chocolate and amber two-tone · turned-back cuffs · red satin lining · single hook closure · Faux Fur · Carol Horn - Captivity / Saks Fifth Avenue · 1970s · AU 10 · L 77cm flat · Very good

This coat does not enter a room quietly. The pile is dense and plush, a chocolate-brown that shifts toward amber at the turned-back cuffs where the nap catches light differently, two tones of the same warmth layered over each other. The silhouette is boxy and squared at the shoulder, the kind of geometry that looks deliberate against a long skirt or over wide trousers. A single hook holds the open front. Inside: red satin, vivid and precise, the lining colour chosen to be found.

Carol Horn established her label in the mid-1970s as a designer for professional women who wanted clothing with genuine intention. The Captivity line, stocked at Saks Fifth Avenue among other prestige retailers, brought that vision to outerwear. A coat like this was not a seasonal purchase. It was a decision.

The plush is deep and full, with no matting or bald patches across the surface. The red satin lining is clean and bright. The hook closure operates well.

Material

Plush pile (fibre content to confirm in hand)

Care

dry clean only. Store hung in a cloth bag. Keep the surface aired.

More on looking after vintage pieces in our care guide.

Size

Measured flat: length 77cm, bust 60cm, waist 65cm, hip 78cm, the sleeves 62cm long and 24cm wide. Those numbers describe her deliberately boxy cut: she is roomiest through the middle, exactly as designed, with space for a jumper underneath.

Our size guide explains how vintage sizing is read here.

Condition

very good. The pile is intact. Interior clean. Minor age-toning at the hook closure area, consistent with wear.

Our condition lexicon explains the grades we use.

Before it reaches you

Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.

The red lining is a secret the coat keeps at body temperature, and she has kept better ones. Plush this deep runs its own weather system: mild, permanent, faintly cinematic, with a high chance of being offered the good table. Somewhere on Fifth Avenue a doorman is still nodding at her out of habit. Put her on in April. Surrender the whole idea of October.
