Poured, not sewn. That is the first impression. Black satin with a wet-look lustre, cut to a deep V and gathered gently beneath the bust so the fabric falls from that one point of tension into a long bias sweep. Wide-set straps, and a back that answers the front with a plunge of its own, diving to a pointed midriff seam where an invisible zip hides along the spine. That pointed seam is proper dressmaking: it lets the bodice gather softly above while the skirt falls dead straight below, and it turns the back of the dress into its best angle.
She is a 1990s dress. The label reads Outrage, made in Australia, one of the Australian labels of that decade that vintage dealers now trade on sight and historians never wrote down. Even the vintage forums come up empty-handed on Outrage, which tells you how these houses worked: city workrooms, boutique racks, no archive, all the documentation left hanging in wardrobes like this one. The dress itself is the record, and it records its decade precisely, the years the slip dress climbed out of the underwear drawer and into the evening. Born as lingerie in the 1930s when bias-cutting first made cloth cling, revived by the minimalists sixty years on, and never quite off duty since.

Care
cool hand-wash with mild detergent, no wringing. Hang to drip dry away from sun. Cool iron on the reverse only if needed.

Size
Measured flat: bust 45cm, waist 41cm, hip 54cm, length 153cm shoulder to hem. The front neckline plunges 23cm; the back dives 38cm. Tagged a vintage 10, and vintage sizing runs a size or so smaller than today's: she sits best on a modern AU 8–10.

Condition
very good. The satin holds its wet-look sheen without the dulling that comes from careless washing, no snags or pulls catch the light along the bias, and the invisible zip glides. The bust gathers sit even and full.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
She was cut from the kind of midnight that never quite ends, the last hour of some 1996 party still going on behind a door nobody can find anymore. Put her on and you can hear it faintly: ice against glass, a taxi idling, someone deciding to stay after all. The zip knows the way home. It has never once used it.
