Every row of this cardigan catches the light differently, the waffle texture turning each ridge into its own small line of shadow, plain white made quietly complicated.
No label survives here, because there was never one to begin with. This is handmade, the waffle stitch worked evenly across the body and both sleeves in a wool-acrylic blend, a pattern that turns up again and again through the 1960s in home-knitting, practical and warm without the fuss of cabling or lace. Four plastic buttons close the front, simple and unfussy, exactly what you would want for a garment that is going on and off a baby several times a day.
The body and sleeves are worked in a consistent waffle stitch from shoulder to hem, with a plain ribbed trim at the cuffs and a scalloped picot edge finishing the front bands and hem. Construction is neat throughout, no dropped stitches, no uneven tension, the kind of evenness that comes from a genuinely practised hand. The four buttons sit evenly spaced down the front placket, unadorned and entirely functional.

Care
Hand wash in cool water with a wool-safe detergent, or a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh bag. Reshape while damp and dry flat away from direct heat and sun, so the waffle texture and picot trim keep their definition. Store folded rather than on a hanger. As with all vintage pieces with surface detail, buttons, embellishments, ribbons or applied decoration, this piece is not suitable for unsupervised sleep.

Size
Measured flat: Measured flat, 32cm from shoulder to hem. The bust measures 29cm across (58cm around) and stretches further given the give in the knit, narrowing to 27cm at the waist (54cm around) and 26cm at the hem (52cm around). Sleeve length from shoulder to cuff is 29cm, with the bicep at 11cm flat and the cuff at 9cm. Neck drop is 6cm. This fits newborn through to approximately three months.

Condition
Excellent. No stains, no snags in the waffle texture, no moth history and no loose threads across any of the eight photographs taken. All four buttons are present and secure, and the ribbed cuffs and picot trim hold their shape with no stretching.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
This is the cardigan equivalent of a good, plain sentence, nothing to prove, everything in order. I imagine it going straight back into rotation, worn over singlets on cool mornings, draped over the back of a pram, forgotten and then gratefully found again in the bottom of a bag. It does not ask to be looked at twice, which might be exactly why it is worth keeping.
