Held Line · Playtex 1960s White Lace Longline Bra
Cotton and lace · boned longline structure · fixed straps · cotton-lined · Playtex, style 239 · 1960s · 61cm total length, stretches to 75cm · tagged 12A / 85A · no staining, elastic unweakened
Underneath the lace is a plain cotton lining, the layer nobody sees and the only one that ever touches skin, doing its quiet work while the outside gets to be beautiful.
Nine narrow channels hold the boning in place, each one stitched by a machine guided by someone who had done this so many times the seams barely wander. The lace was cut to sit exactly over that cotton foundation, edge matched to edge, so the two layers move as one instead of shifting apart the way lace usually does against skin. The straps were sewn fixed rather than left to adjust, a small vote of confidence that the fit underneath had already been solved. Playtex called pieces like this one Style 239, made sometime in the 1960s, when a longline bra was still expected to do real architectural work under a fitted blouse.
She measures 61cm at rest and stretches to 75cm without strain, the elastic still doing exactly what it did decades ago. The straps are fixed rather than adjustable, set at 30cm front to back, and the cup and band read a tagged 12A, 85A. No staining anywhere, and the elastic has kept its memory rather than losing it.
Material
Cotton and lace shell, lined in cotton for comfort against skin, with elastic in the back and side panels.
Care
Hand wash in cool water and reshape while damp. Dry flat away from direct heat to protect the elastic and boning. Skip the iron, the lace does not need it and the boning will not thank you for it.

Condition
Excellent. No staining anywhere on the cotton or lace, and the elastic is strong and unweakened, with real stretch still left in it. The boning sits straight in every channel, and the multi-row hook-and-eye closure is fully intact. This one reads exhibition condition for a piece of this age.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
A longline bra keeps a secret architecture that nobody else ever sees, boning and lace working together under a blouse that gets all the compliments. She has held her shape through however many decades without once being asked to, without applause, the most unglamorous kind of devotion there is. Touch the boning and it remembers being new. The rest of her has simply gone soft around that memory.
