Matte black suede, clean edges, double handles looped through gold-tone ring-stud fittings, a double-spike clasp that locks with a satisfying click. A structured handbag that holds its silhouette completely. The only decoration is three small brass eyelets set in a row along the top flap: exactly the right amount for a bag of this shape and intention.
Newman, made in Sydney, 1960s. The Australian leather goods tradition at its most functional and assured, from the period before domestic manufacture gave way almost entirely to imports. Newman was part of a generation of Sydney craftsmen working in leather who understood that a good bag should outlast its season, that the quality of the construction was the whole argument. The interior is lined in black cotton with a single zipped pocket.

Brush gently with a suede brush after each wear. Store in a cotton bag away from light and moisture. Do not wet.

Condition
Good. The suede has the patina of use, with slight surface marking consistent with age. No structural damage. The clasp mechanism is intact and secure.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
A bag this structured has opinions, and it holds its silhouette the way certain people hold a room: entirely, and without appearing to try. The double-spike clasp shuts with a click that is the whole of its personality, a small firm full stop at the end of every errand. Three brass eyelets sit along the flap in a row, doing nothing whatsoever except the geometry the bag is named for, which is the most confident thing a detail can do. Made in Sydney to outlast its season, it has outlasted a good deal more than that, and looks faintly amused about it.
