Layer after layer of white petals build out from the centre, satin giving way to a finer scalloped edge of lace, and behind all of it a spray of feathers stands up loose and pale, catching light the flowers themselves cannot.
Someone built this by hand, petal by petal, gluing each ring slightly higher than the last so the centre reads full rather than flat. A scatter of faux pearls sits on fine wire among the feathers, the kind of detail added last, once the shape underneath had already been decided. She carries no label, the sort of small bridal or millinery workroom piece that was never meant to be traced back to a name, made sometime in the 2000s, when a flower like this was standard finishing for a hat, a hairstyle or a lapel.
A dotted illusion netting sits underneath the petals like a held breath, its polka dots throwing small shadows across the kraft paper she is photographed against. She fastens two ways: a pin on one side of the backing disc and a spring-loaded clip on the other, riveted in place so either can take the weight. The glue holding the layers together has yellowed slightly at the back over time, visible only if you turn her over, and does not show at all once she is pinned or clipped in place.

Care
Keep her dry and away from steam or direct heat, both the glue and the feathers dislike moisture. Spot clean only if truly necessary, and store flat or upright rather than crushed in a drawer so the petals and feathers keep their shape.

Size
Measured flat: Measured across the full spray, she runs 20cm by 18cm feather tip to feather tip. Substantial enough to anchor a neckline, a lapel, or a low bun, and light enough not to fight the hair or fabric she is pinned to.

Condition
Very good. The feathers are all intact with no shedding, and the petals hold their shape well. A few of the lace-edged petals show gentle fraying at the tips from age, more textural than damaging, and the glue at the back has yellowed slightly with time though this is hidden once worn. The pin and clip fastenings both work as they should.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
She has two ways of attaching herself to a life and no real preference between them, lapel or hairline, both equally hers. Everything true about her age lives on the side nobody looks at, a small private yellowing she has no interest in explaining to a stranger. The pearls came loose from somewhere colder than this room and never quite warmed up. Wear her facing out and she keeps her secrets facing in.
