Black, but never flat. The fabric is a smooth-faced synthetic with a soft lustre, so every gather takes the light differently and the dress reads in a dozen depths of dark. Around the scooped neckline runs a standing ruffle, gathered tight so it frames the collarbone the way a ruff frames a portrait sitter. The sleeves arrive full and gathered, holding their own air, and below the bodice the skirt simply lets go: yards of it, falling straight into movement.
The label reads L.T.D. by Roberta, an American occasion-dress house of the late 1970s and 80s whose work now circulates among vintage dealers precisely because it did occasion so well. Roberta dressed the parties of that decade: the proms, the dinners, the nights that required a dress that could hold a room. The 1980s spent a great deal of energy remembering other centuries, and this dress belongs to that current, the decade's romance with the Victorian translated into the fabrics the decade did best. Synthetics get little credit, but they are why a dress like this survives: the colour has not faded, the gathers have not collapsed, and it will pour out of a suitcase ready to be worn. Look at the neckline gathering; a ruffle this disciplined took patience at the machine.
Care
cool gentle machine wash in a bag, or hand-wash. Hang to dry away from sun and heat, never a hot dryer. Cool iron only if ever needed; synthetics remember a scorch forever.

Size
Measured flat: length 109cm, the skirt accounting for 68cm of it. Bust 45cm, waist 36cm, the hip entirely free above that full skirt. The puffed sleeves run 50cm long and 37cm wide at their fullest, and the ruffled neckline drops 18cm. She reads as an AU 10–12, fitted at the waist and generous everywhere the gathers take over.

Condition
very good. The black is deep and even, the ruffle stands as it should, and the gathers are all present and correct.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
Every so often this dress hums a bar of something from 1984 and will not say which song. She knows exactly how much punch was spilled at the last party and by whom, and she has decided to be gracious about it. Walk her past a mirror at midnight and the ruffle stands a little taller, like a portrait clearing its throat. RSVP yes. She already has.
