The smocking catches the light before anything else does, a honeycomb of navy and white thread pulled tight across the chest, the kind of handwork that turns a plain dress into something considered.
The label survives, Baby Q, tagged a vintage size 00. It sits comfortably in the 1980s, when smocked polka dot dresses like this one were a staple of good baby wardrobes, made to be worn to something, a christening, a birthday, a Sunday lunch with grandparents. The white Peter Pan collar carries its own small garland, tiny navy flowers with green stems worked in a chain around the edge, the one purely decorative flourish on an otherwise practical dress.
The bodice gathers into a wide band of honeycomb smocking, sitting just below a plain polka dot yoke and opening into a full, gathered skirt below. Both long sleeves puff softly at the shoulder and close at the wrist with a single button each. The back fastens with two buttons, simple enough for quick changes. Every dot in the print reads crisp and even, the kind of fine polka dot that only shows its scale up close.

Care
Hand wash in cool water or a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh bag, given the poly-cotton blend handles a little more robustly than pure natural fibres. Avoid wringing the smocked band, easing the water out instead to protect the gathers. Hang or dry flat away from direct sun, which will help stop any further fading. Iron on a low setting if needed, avoiding the smocking itself. As with all vintage pieces with surface detail, buttons, embellishments, ribbons or applied decoration, this piece is not suitable for unsupervised sleep.

Size
Measured flat: Measured flat, 45cm from shoulder to hem. The bust measures 30cm across with a little give from the smocking (60cm around), and the waist, which is built to move rather than sit fixed, opens out to 45cm across (90cm around) thanks to the pleating below the smocked band. The hip measures 56cm across (112cm around) and the hem sweeps out to 69cm across. Sleeve length is 26cm with a bicep of 17cm flat, narrowing to an 8cm cuff. Neck drop is 7cm. Tagged a vintage 00, which sits at approximately 3 to 6 months, though the smocking and gathered skirt give some room to grow into.

Condition
Good to very good. The navy ground and its small dots have softened slightly with age rather than staying sharp, and the white Peter Pan collar shows a faint discolouration consistent with a dress that was worn and loved rather than kept in storage. No holes, no tears and no loose threads in the smocking itself, which holds its gathers well. Both cuff buttons are present and secure.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
I think this dress has already been to at least one birthday party, possibly two, judging by the particular care someone took matching thread to fabric in that smocked band. It has the bearing of a dress kept for best, taken out of a drawer with tissue paper still creased into the sleeves. Wherever it goes next, I hope it gets one more occasion worth dressing up for, then a good long rest folded away until someone finds it again and wonders who wore it first.
