Command · 1970s Black Satin Sequin Evening Belt
Black satin · disc sequin wave pattern · silver bugle bead border · no label · 1970s · approx. 8cm wide · hidden velcro closure
The entire outer surface of this curved belt is worked in overlapping black disc sequins arranged in a wave pattern, and both long edges are bordered with a standing row of silver bugle beads, each one set perpendicular to the surface so they catch light at a different angle from the sequins behind them. The effect is layered, dimensional, and deeply beautiful.
No label, 1970s. The decade that understood that a wide belt was not merely a functional object but a statement about where the waist was, and what it deserved. Sequinned evening belts like this were made for the disco era but designed to outlast it: the construction is too considered, the materials too substantial for a piece intended only for one season. A hidden velcro closure keeps it secure at the inner edge. The kind of belt that changes what you are wearing.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
A belt named Command does not ask where the waist is; it decides, and everything above and below rearranges itself to agree. The disc sequins are laid in a wave and the bugle beads stand to attention along both edges, so the whole thing catches light on two schedules at once and never quite settles. Made for the disco and built to outlast it, it treats every later decade as a room it has walked into wearing exactly the right thing. Fasten it and you inherit its posture, whether you had planned to or not.
