The daisies scatter loose and unpatterned across the cotton, some upright, some falling sideways on their stems, the kind of print that looks hand-tossed even though a machine set it. A single cord of mint green outlines the waistband, the pocket, and the hem, the one considered decision holding the whole loose composition together.
Nothing inside this apron names a maker, not even a laundry mark, which was ordinary for a piece meant to live in one kitchen and be replaced when it wore through. Half-aprons like this one were a fixture of 1940s-50s domestic life, tied on over a dress for an afternoon of baking or visiting, practical rather than precious. The floral cotton and the piped, teardrop pocket place it squarely in these decades' taste for cheerful, unfussy prints.
The waistband sits flat and unshaped, gathering into a full skirt at 72cm across, finished at 58cm length with a scalloped hem piped to match the pocket. Two long ties, 50cm each, mean the fit is generous and adjustable rather than fixed to one figure. Shown here on an Australian size 10 form, she would sit comfortably on a range of waists either side of that.

Care
Hand wash in cool water or a gentle machine cycle, cotton like this holds up well. Line dry to keep the piping crisp. A warm iron if needed, the print and trim can take it.

Condition
Excellent. No stains, no fading in the piping, and no separation at the pocket or hem seams. The cotton is bright and the scallops hold their shape cleanly throughout. This one reads exhibition condition.

Before it reaches you
Someone loved this before you did, and I try to honour that properly. Each piece is hand washed, or cleaned in the way that the fabric permits, then steamed until it softens and straightens and feels newly attended to. Wherever a button was missing, it has been replaced with a vintage one from my long-kept collection. Wherever a hem had given way, I fix it by hand. By the time it leaves this room it is genuinely clean, pressed, whole, and looked over one final time before I let myself believe it is ready. Not restored. Not made new. Just returned to a state where it can be loved again, by someone who was not there the first time.
The pocket has held clothespins, a phone number scrawled on a torn corner, a handful of snow peas going nowhere in particular, and it has never once complained about any of it. The daisies were sewn on facing every direction at once, which the archive suspects was less a printing error than an argument nobody bothered to settle. Tie her on properly and she still remembers she is meant for flour and gossip, not decoration. Some Sunday she will smell like something baking again.
